Sociologically, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve is a long established, inner-city neighbourhood inhabited by a low-income, mostly French-speaking population. There are very few immigrants. Over time, the neighbourhood has been significantly affected by the decline in Montreal's manufacturing sector and the associated loss of blue collar jobs. It has recently witnessed a re-birth, thanks in part to the Olympic Park.
